Canadian Highway Road Quality

Road Quality in Canada

One of the things that most suprises people when I talk about my journey across Canada is the variation in the quality the Highways across the country. Most people are not particularly suprised when I inform them that Alberta has the best higwhays in the country. However, most are suprised to learn that Ontario has the absolute worst quality roads in the entire country. This, then is my discussion about the various highways that I travelled on when I journeyed across Canada in 2002.

Which Roads are the Best in Canada?

Typically the best roads in the country are ones associated with the TransCanada (Highway 1 everywhere except Ontario which is split between Highway 17 and 19). However, different Provinces in this country have different standards and abilities to manage the highways in their respective provinces. The following list is organized in best to worst order for Road Quality based on my experiences in that province.

  1. Alberta (best quality highways)
  2. New Brunswick
  3. Newfoundland
  4. Quebec
  5. Nova Scotia
  6. British Columbia
  7. Prince Edward Island
  8. Manitoba
  9. Saskatchewan
  10. Ontario (worst quality highways)

Now that you know about the road quality in Canada and across the various provinces, why not return to the article on the route across Canada.
